MULTIPLY-6G in a Nutshell

MULTIPLY-6G is a European research initiative funded through Horizon Europe and supported by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU).

Future mobile networks will need to handle massive volumes of data for immersive applications without running up unsustainable energy bills. MULTIPLY-6G addresses this bottleneck head-on by rethinking the basic building blocks of wireless connectivity.

The project brings together signal processing and antenna design, pairing multi-dimensional radio waveforms with large holographic antenna arrays inside an open, AI-driven Open RAN architecture. By joining up hardware design and signal processing from the start, the consortium aims to boost network energy efficiency by 100 times while keeping connections fast, reliable, and practical for real-world deployment.

Targeting major leaps in energy efficiency, network capacity, and sub-centimetre sensing accuracy.

The core idea behind MULTIPLY-6G is the “multiplicative effect”, where combining clever waveform design with large antenna arrays produces far better results than tackling either part in isolation. By design, all developments remain fully compatible with existing 5G (3GPP) networks, ensuring these innovations can transition smoothly into real-world 6G infrastructure.
